When life feels uncertain, our minds race and self-kindness fades. Mark Bertin offers a simple walking meditation to meet the unknown with compassion, one step at a time.
### Why Uncertainty Feels So Loud
When we're facing the unknown, our thoughts and emotions often go into overdrive. That's not a personal failing. It's just how the human brain responds to not knowing what comes next. And somewhere in all that mental noise, we tend to lose sight of being kind to ourselves.
Mark Bertin, a pediatrician and mindfulness teacher, reminds us of something simple but easy to forget: we are not alone in this. Everyone wrestles with uncertainty. The difference is whether we meet it with compassion or with criticism.
### A Practice You Can Do Anywhere
Walking meditation is one of the most accessible ways to work with uncertainty, because it doesn't ask you to sit still and quiet your mind. Instead, you move. You let your body lead while your attention settles into the rhythm of each step.
Here's how to try it:
- Find a stretch of ground where you can walk slowly, maybe 20 to 30 feet back and forth, indoors or outside.
- Stand still for a moment. Feel your feet against the floor or ground.
- Begin walking at a natural, unhurried pace. Notice the shift of weight from one foot to the other.
- When your mind drifts into worry, gently name it. "Planning." "Worrying." Then return to the next step.
- If emotions rise, don't push them away. Let them be there while you keep walking.
You're not trying to solve anything. You're just practicing being present with what's here, one step at a time.
### Meeting the Unknown With Kindness
> "You don't have to have it all figured out to take the next step."
That's really the heart of this practice. Uncertainty isn't a problem to fix. It's a condition we all live with, and we can learn to move through it without turning on ourselves.
When you notice your inner critic getting loud, try asking a simple question: What would I say to a friend feeling this way? Then offer yourself those same words. It might feel awkward at first. That's okay. Kindness takes practice too.
### Small Steps, Real Change
You don't need a perfect meditation session to benefit. Five minutes of walking with awareness can shift how you carry the rest of your day. You might notice you're less reactive, a little more patient, a bit more willing to sit with not knowing.
And on the days when it doesn't work? That's not failure either. It's just another step. You can always begin again.
Uncertainty will keep showing up. But so can you, with a little more compassion each time.
